Stress may feel like the tension of a bough about to snap or a branch about to break. There may be a gradual accumulation of circumstances that become inescapable: weighing you down from morning until night when perhaps longed for sleep does not arrive, such is the pressure that has built up.
You may feel continually assaulted by pre-occupying thoughts from the problems and issues that life is throwing at you whether it is in the work place, socially, relationally, financially or from a host of other life circumstances.
Stress can affect people in different ways striking the sufferer to varying degrees from different sources. It may be that you have coped for many years with especially stressful circumstances and only now does it become unbearable; you may notice that some circumstances affect you more than other people; there may be a pattern to circumstances that you find stressful or you may be particularly vulnerable to stress in certain situations.
Stress at its most evident and traumatic can lead to a breakdown. You may even find physical movement difficult; your emotions may swing wildly from tears to uncharacteristic outbursts. You may be unable to sleep, or relax; you may feel constantly alert and desperate to escape from your circumstances but not able to plan or concentrate.
My hope in working with you would be to help you feel supported in an understanding and warm therapeutic relationship while we look at those stressful areas together. We may look at what is happening for you, what your feelings are and why it has become so debilitating. We may look at how your life might work better for you and bring back control over those circumstances that may have exercised such control over you. There may be elements of your past that influence how you react to some circumstances in the present which it may be helpful to look at together. Whatever the causes and circumstances, my hope will be that you achieve a quality to your life no matter how remote that may seem now.
