Over many years of counselling men, it is undoubtedly true that while the sex of the counsellor should be irrelevant to the counselling process I have found that many men for a host of reasons prefer to be counselled by a man.
Many of the reasons and circumstances why this is the case will also, ironically, form an element of the therapeutic process. We are all a product of our individual experiences of life much of which remains unconscious until illuminated by the therapeutic light. It is those experiences which underlie our unhelpful feelings and behaviours, feelings and behaviours which can often be peculiar to men and arise from unhelpful relational experiences.

I have worked with, for example, men who have suffered from different forms of early life abuse; early life neglect; bullying from various sources; humiliation; relationship difficulties in various forms and in forming relationships; anxiety; depression, and many others. The reasons for coming to counselling are common across a population. I have however found that many men would prefer to see a male counsellor for many reasons. Male counsellors are in a significant minority. I have developed a counselling practice for men to meet this problem and provide a therapeutic environment with a specialist understanding of the many problems that can haunt men and blight their lives.
